Wingperson KC

Wingperson KC provides a buddy meetup service that pairs an ally with a person in the LGBTQIA+ community who is seeking a companion to do an activity with in the public space, IRL. To request a meetup:

Coming Soon! In addition to buddy meetups, we will post group meetup events where people in the LGBTQIA+ community can connect with peers and allies for mutual companionship in the public space, IRL.

• Why does this service exist?

Inspired by the film “Will & Harper,” where a transgender woman learns to renavigate public spaces after her transition, Wingperson KC seeks to provide the buddyship that Will Farrell gives to Harper Steele on her journey. 

• Where can we request a buddy meetup?

Anywhere public in the KC area, for example, errand running, museum hopping, clothes shopping, coffee … you name it.

• Who provides this service?

Ally volunteers come from a qualifying organization, such as PFLAG Kansas City, and are trained to: 

• Engage helpfully in the activity; know about locations that are comfortable to the LGBTQIA+ community; assess for any anxiety and help alleviate; practice the “5 D’s of Bystander Intervention” if needed (Distract, Don’t Engage, Delegate).

Ally volunteers will not initiate personal questions or political discussions.
